Environmental protection

The concept of the combined cycle power plant (CCPP) is based on state-of-the art technology for production of electricity and heat in combined cycle, using natural gas as exclusive fuel. TE-TO AD power plant is the only of this type in the country and in the wider region. All available national and international environmental legal requirements were implemented during the design of the power plant.

Utilization of natural gas as exclusive fuel for power and heat generation results into significant reductions of air emissions: SO2 emissions are eliminated, while CO2 emissions are significantly reduced compared to conventional coal-fired power plants. Gas turbine integrates the newest technology of EV (environmental) low NOx burners, which design ensures low NOx emissions and high fuel efficiency. PM and dust emissions are eliminated.

All waste waters and residues of the CCPP are collected and treated in the waste water treatment plant before their disposal, in order to minimize the environmental impacts and to comply with the legal requirements. This ensures that emissions in the final recipient meet the strict national legislation limits. Cooling concept with air-water cooling tower (hybrid type) is utilized instead of conventional wet cooling tower.

The use of this cooling tower is environmentally favorable due to the minimized cooling water consumption and the elimination of fog associated with the evaporation of cooling water from the wet cooling towers.

Waste management is in line with the appropriate national legislation requirements. The Company has a licensed waste manager.

TE-TO AD is a good example of environmentally sound technology, contributing to sustainable development and attracting additional foreign investments in the energy sector in Republic of North Macedonia.

A-Integrated Environmental Permit

TE-TO AD Skopje belongs to the category of combustion installations with rated thermal heat capacity 50 MW or more, required to obtain an environmental permit.

Before the start of official operation, TE-TO AD Skopje obtained the A- Integrated Environmental Permit, in line with the Law on Environment, which, within the past years, has been amended and renewed:

A-Integrated environmental permit for TE-TO AD Skopje, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, No 11-31/5, 23.02.2011

Amended A-Integrated environmental permit for TE-TO AD Skopje, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, No. 11-1407/3, 11.04.2013

(Renewed) A-Integrated environmental permit for TE-TO AD Skopje, issued by the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, No. UP1-11/3 21/2020, 05.10.2020

ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management Systems

In November 2023, TE-TO AD Skopje successfully implemented the certification of the Standard for Environmental Management Systems – ISO 14001:2015, which became part of the Integrated Management System (IMS). With that, TE-TO AD Skopje once again confirmed its commitment to achieving high standards for the protection and improvement of the environment and fulfilled last year’s plan for the implementation and certification of this standard.
